Weeds or Wishes? Coming Into Focus #1

Springtime in New York, and I still see dandelion fuzz as a thousand wishes, not a thousand weeds. How many things have we been taught to override, despite something in us quietly feeling otherwise?
When did critical thinking become synonymous with being labeled a conspiracy theorist? In the 90s, my teachers encouraged us to question things, think deeply, challenge assumptions, and form our own conclusions. Somewhere along the way, many people stopped trusting their own discernment and started outsourcing it to corporations, headlines, experts, trends, and group consensus.
I still scratch my head how a flower that feeds pollinators coming out of winter, has medicinal properties, grows freely without permission, and once symbolized childhood wonder was successfully rebranded into something undesirable. Something that people spend hard-earned money trying to destroy. Not because nature changed, but because perception did.
At one point, I allowed my mind to override what my body knew, until I saw the evidence that products designed to “fix” the problem became billion-dollar industries, despite lawsuits, health concerns, and mounting questions about long-term effects.
I’m not telling you what to believe. I’m asking when we stopped listening to ourselves. When did intuition become irrational? When did questioning become dangerous? When did independent thought become something to mock instead of something to nurture?
Maybe the point isn’t whether dandelions are weeds or wishes. Maybe the point is noticing how easily perception can be shaped when we stop trusting our own inner authority and hand it over to the “experts.”
I’ve taught my children to question EVERYTHING, and they do. Way beyond what mom and dad may believe, and that makes us happier than hell.
At almost 50 years young, I’m now going outside to blow into the wind another wish…
'Til next time...
Your Fellow Traveler, Patty
